Transition from development to commercialization of MEMS, and execution focus
to benefit from introduction of industry veteran
San Jose, CA, December 7, 2005
Discera (www.discera.com), an analog fabless semiconductor company, and industry leader in CMOS MEMS technology, today announced the appointment of Tom Willey as CEO and President.
Willey brings more than 15 years experience growing businesses in the communications and wireless semiconductor markets. His accomplishments include doubling Philips Semiconductors Cellular chip business to $270M; developing and executing a complete “chips through handset” CDMA customer solution strategy that enabled the successful penetration of the fast growing local manufacturing Chinese cellular handset market.
“Tom brings strong management experience, solid industry knowledge and a proven record of building a successful organization,” said Rick Snyder, Chairman of Discera. “We are excited that Tom will be at the helm as Discera moves from the sampling stage to production.”
Most recently, Willey was President & CEO of Innovics Wireless where he successfully developed and delivered the industry's 1st WCDMA data PC card using their internally developed baseband 3G-modem chip. Some of his previous companies include Philips Semiconductors, VLSI, National Semiconductor and Hewlett Packard.
“I am delighted to join Discera at this stage. I believe we have the technology and the potential to significantly reduce the BOM cost of electronic systems, while also reducing their geometries dramatically,” said Tom Willey. ”Discera has some very talented people that we will augment with a world class management team to bring this opportunity to fruition.”
Founded in 2001, Discera has been in “stealth” mode, commercializing the world’s first CMOS silicon resonators, and oscillator clock timing products, using its patented PureSiliconTM process. The MEMS based products being developed by Discera will greatly improve the size, power, and cost of timing circuits in any electronic system, use standard CMOS processes, and can be built in any CMOS foundry.
About Discera Corporation
Discera is a fabless analog semiconductor company focusing on tiny, high performance silicon resonators for the frequency and timing control markets. The company’s PureSilicon™ resonator technology is a fundamental building block that can be used in creating fully integrated, low cost, small form factor wireline and wireless products, such as oscillators, filters, and RF components. Unlike crystal based oscillators, Discera’s PureSilicon™ based CMOS oscillators can be integrated into other CMOS based circuits. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in San Jose, California, Discera is a privately held company with investments from Ardesta, Partech, 3i, and Qualcomm Ventures.
