WHAT ARE MEMs?

MEMS means Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems. MEMS structures exist today as miniature mechanical and/or electromechanical structures designed to perform tasks that previously were done with much larger mechanical structures.

MEMS benefits include smaller size, lower power consumption, accelerated time to market and significantly reduced costs.

FAQ

Why has Discera chosen the FF beam structure?
Discera has developed a large portfolio of CMOS MEMS resonator structures, including Comb-drive, CC beam, FF beam, Disk, Square, and Wineglass devices. We chose to bring the FF beam structure to production first, due to its frequency range and its benefits in performance, manufacturability, size, cost and power handling capabilities.

Are there other companies with CMOS resonators?
Yes, there are currently a handful of companies in various stages of CMOS resonator development. We believe we have a 1 to 2 year advantage over the rest of the marketplace, but are hopeful that other companies will indeed be successful. The marketplace will feel more comfortable with CMOS resonators if there is more than just one supplier.

Can I buy these products today?
Discera is currently sampling it’s crystal oscillator replacement products, with production scheduled to start in 4Q06.

Why is integration important?
Integration at the package level and in the future, at the chip level, makes timing control products much easier to use, as well as reducing the size and lowering the cost.

Are there any industry standard footprints?
Yes, the crystal oscillator industry has numerous standard footprint sizes. The most common of which are offered by Discera, and they are 2.5mm x 2mm, 3.2mm x 2.5mm, 3.2mm x 5mm, and 5mm x 7mm.

How do Discera products compare to quartz crystal based products?
Discera’s CMOS resonators, and crystal oscillator replacement products compare very favorably to quartz crystals and crystal oscillator specifications. In most cases, we offer improved performance as well as smaller size and lower cost. In addition, we have compiled years of quality and reliability test results that compare very favorably to quartz crystal and crystal oscillator.

How can I contact a Discera sales representative?
Discera has sales representatives and distributors located in most regions around the world. You can search our website for the sales rep or distributor closest to you, or you can contact Discera directly by sending an e-mail to sales@discera.com, or by calling (408) 432-8600 X201.

Who are the lead investors in Discera?/ Is Discera publicly traded?
Discera is a privately held company. Our investors include Ardesta, 3i, Partech, and Qualcomm Inc.

When was Discera founded?
Discera was founded in 2001, based on CMOS Resonator research and development started in 1995 at the Universtity of Michigan.
