Wireless Microcomponent Developer Discera Joins Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Center

BSAC Affiliation Provides Access to Latest Research Results and Technology Commercialization Opportunity

Campbell, CA, May 29, 2003
Discera, Inc., an innovative provider of low-power microcomponents for wireless applications, today announced it has joined BSAC, the Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Center of the University of California, enabling the company to have early access to new research in wireless MEMS-based microcomponents and related fabrication technology, as well as the opportunity to commercialize promising longer term research.

Membership within BSAC’s industry affiliates program helps fund BSAC researchers and staff in support of the overall research goals of BSAC and provides financial resources for early-stage exploratory projects that can subsequently evolve into individually funded projects.

“BSAC is well known within the wireless MEMS industry for its cutting-edge work in miniaturizing wireless components, and in device fabrication, packaging and assembly,” said Didier Lacroix, Chief Executive Officer, Discera, Inc. “Being part of BSAC will allow us to stay closely in touch with the latest developments that address critical industry needs.”

“Discera has already shown itself to be an innovative force in the move to shrink wireless architectures,” said Roger Howe, a faculty Director of BSAC and a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. “We are excited to have them on board and look forward to hearing their feedback on our ongoing projects.”

BSAC’s research programs include MEMS-enabled ultralow power wireless communication technologies, micro power generation, self-propelled microrobots, and microfluidic valves and pumps for bioanalysis and medicine delivery.

About Discera Corporation
Discera is a fabless analog semiconductor company focusing on tiny, high performance silicon resonators for the frequency and timing control markets. The company’s PureSilicon™ resonator technology is a fundamental building block that can be used in creating fully integrated, low cost, small form factor wireline and wireless products, such as oscillators, filters, and RF components. Unlike crystal based oscillators, Discera’s PureSilicon™ based CMOS oscillators can be integrated into other CMOS based circuits. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in San Jose, California, Discera is a privately held company with investments from Ardesta, Partech, 3i, and Qualcomm Ventures. More information is available at www.discera.com.

About BSAC
BSAC is an NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Consortium located at UC Berkeley and UC Davis. BSAC currently has over 100 projects and 120 researchers spanning a wide range of MEMS and microsystem technologies and applications. Thirty-three industrial and government member organizations actively participate in BSAC through its Industrial Advisory Board. More information can be found at www.bsac.eecs.berkeley.edu.com.
