Discera, Inc., announced last week a partnership with Excelpoint, a leading electronic component distributors in the Asia - Pacific region. Excelpoint will represent Discera and distribute its products in the Asia-Pacific region. The agreement includes some of the world's largest and fastest growing electronics markets, such as China, Singapore, Hong Kong, and India.
For more than fifty years quartz crystals have been the solution of choice to provide an accurate reference frequency for filters, oscillators and RF circuits. Many believed that quartz crystals would never be replaced in these applications. Never say never. Discera, Inc., a San Jose, CA company, has developed a PureSiliconTM CMOS MEMS resonator, which can replace a quartz crystal and offer great savings. Timing devices are used in virtually every electronic end-use product. Discera's PureSilicon resonators offer significant advantages in cost, size and power in all of these applications.
These MEMS resonators are especially attractive for applications in portable handheld devices such as cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras or portable media players. Designers for all of these devices are under continuous pressure to save cost, space and power. Discera's MEMS resonators offer savings in all of these areas. Asia is a key market for components intended for use in consumer electronics devices.
Discera's partnership with Excelpoint signals the readiness of Discera's technology for full-scale deployment in Asia. The partnership will provide Asian manufacturers with a timing product that will provide step-function improvements in size, power and cost for consumer electronic products. Quartz resonators do provide an accurate frequency reference, but they have many disadvantages such as size, cost power requirements and reliability problems. Discera will be releasing more details about its PureSiliconTM CMOS MEMS resonators with time.
For the present, these MEMS resonators offer great savings, compared to quartz resonators. They should quickly find favor with circuit designers, particularly with designers of handheld, portable devices.
